(From the City of Springfield)Drivers and visitors to downtown Springfield should expect to see changes in closures and traffic flow along Jefferson Avenue between St. Louis and McDaniel streets beginning Monday, June 19 as work on the Jefferson Streetscape Project begins to shift to the west side of Jefferson Avenue.
The west side of the St. Louis and Jefferson intersection will close to traffic as crews begin work on the west portion of the intersection and complete the installation of a new traffic light and pedestrian facilities.
This closure will prohibit motorists on Jefferson from turning west onto Park Central East or south from Park Central East onto southbound Jefferson Avenue. The east portion of the intersection will remain closed. The intersection is anticipated to reopen to all east and westbound traffic in approximately 3 weeks (weather dependent).
Motorists can also expect the single southbound lane of traffic on Jefferson to be shifted to the east side of the roadway between St. Louis and McDaniel to allow crews to work along the west side of the roadway. The west side of the Jefferson and McDaniel intersection will remain open at this time, allowing motorists to continue turning westbound and southbound.
“We want to recognize our contractors with KCI for their adaptability and speedy work over the last month to help us make up time on this project,” says City Project Manager Zach Butcher. “We also thank area businesses and visitors for their patience as we work diligently to wrap up these improvements and reopen as quickly as we can.”

A new traffic signal with pedestrian facilities will be installed at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and St. Louis Street, while signal modifications and upgrades will be constructed at the McDaniel and Walnut intersections. The project will also include upgrades to electrical facilities in Jubilee Park to aid in future downtown event needs.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by August at a cost of $1.8 million. It is funded through the ¼-cent Capital Improvement and 1/8-cent Transportation sales taxes.
