Monett teen arrested for DWI, cocaine possession, texting while driving after running red light, killing Crane residents


A Monett man was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated following a two-vehicle collision 10:13 p.m. Friday on MO 37 at U. S. 60 in Monett in which two people were killed.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 driven by Rafael Contreras Maldonado, 19, Monett, was being pursued by a Lawrence County deputy when it failed to stop at a red light and struck a 2013 Hyundai Elantra driven by Larry A. Brock, 53, Crane.

Crane and a passenger in his vehicle, Lydia E. Shorey, 61, Crane, were pronounced dead at the scene by Barry County Coroner Gary Swearingen at 12:05 a.m.







Maldonado, who was uninjured, was also cited for two other felonies- possession of cocaine and resisting arrest, as well as texting while driving, careless and imprudent driving, no valid plates, no insurance and no seat belt.

The fatalities were the 62nd and 63rd this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
