Suspect in April 17 Springfield murder arrested in Illinois

Xavier Moore, 21, from Springfield, was identified as the second suspect in the April 17 homicide of Lavelle C. Rose III. On April 25, 2023, the case was presented to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office and Moore was charged with 1st Degree Murder.

Last week, Moore was arrested in Chicago, Illinois. On June 25, 2023, Moore was extradited and booked into the Greene County Jail.

The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office cautions that the charges contained in the felony complaint are merely allegations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.








PREVIOUS RELEASE:


The Springfield Homicide Unit identified 21-year-old Justin L. Bartels, from St. Louis, as a suspect in the April 17 homicide of Lavelle C. Rose III. On April 18, 2023, Bartels was arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail.

On April 19, 2023, the case was presented to the Greene County Prosecutors Office. Bartels has been charged with 2nd Degree Murder, Armed Criminal Action, and 1st Degree Assault. Bond is set at $250,000.

The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office cautions that the charges contained in the felony complaint are merely allegations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

A second suspect has been identified and officers are working to locate that person.

PREVIOUS RELEASE:

On April 17, 2023, at 6:51 p.m., the Springfield Police Department responded to the report of someone who had been shot in a vehicle at the intersection of Forest Ave. and Calhoun St. The male passenger and female driver had multiple gunshot wounds.

The male victim, Lavelle C. Rose III, 18, from East St. Louis, Illinois, was pronounced dead on scene. Rose’s family has been notified.






 

The female was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).

This incident is Springfield’s third homicide investigation in 2023.
