Staff sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood indicted for killing 2-year-old girl

(From the U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri)

A U.S. Army staff sergeant stationed at the Fort Leonard Wood military base has been indicted by a federal grand jury for killing a two-year-old child.

Kevin Long, 40, was charged in a two-count indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Springfield on Tuesday, June 27. That indictment was unsealed and made public today following Long’s arrest and initial court appearance. Long remains in federal custody pending a detention hearing on July 6, 2023.

The federal indictment alleges that on Nov. 6, 2019, Long physically assaulted a two-year-old child, identified in court documents as “Jane Doe,” as part of a pattern and practice of assault against a child.

Long killed Jane Doe, the indictment says, by blunt force injuries in the perpetration of child abuse. Jane Doe was being cared for by Long and his wife in a day care she operated out of their home on Fort Leonard Wood.

Under federal law, murder committed in the perpetration of child abuse is murder in the first degree.

Long also is charged with one count of making a false statement. Long allegedly told authorities during the murder investigation that he was unaware of Army regulations that restricted the operation of a daycare at Fort Leonard Wood.

The charges contained in this indictment are simply accusations, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ami Harshad Miller and Shannon T. Kempf. It was investigated by the United States Army – Criminal Investigation Division, the St. Robert, Mo., Police Department, and the Missouri Department of Social Services.

Aurora/Marionville Police address rumor: The kid didn't stab anybody

(From the Aurora and Marionville Police Department)

Safety of our children is a top priority for police, the schools, and hopefully for everyone in the community. When things happen near our children, it’s of high importance and people should pay attention.

Sometimes, the messaging gets jumbled up, exaggerated, and often just completely made up.

Yesterday, a juvenile known to AMPD was near the Aurora pool, and appeared to be in possession of a knife. He was sharpening the knife and some level of verbal threats were being made.

AMPD immediately responded to a concerned call and ultimately we removed the child from the area. He was later turned over to a legal guardian and the juvenile authorities have been notified.

Because school activities were happening in the area, an alert was sent out to ensure parents and guardians were kept informed of the incident that took place near the school function.

- No one was stabbed

- No one was assaulted

- No one attempted to stab or assault anyone

We hope this clarifies any misinformation that has circulated.

Improvements being made at Hammons Field

 (From the City of Springfield)

Fireworks will not be the only thing to light up the sky during the upcoming July 4th weekend. New LED stadium lights are being installed, thanks to a promised upgrade by the City of Springfield.

The LED lights are the second-largest stadium improvement in ballpark history behind the new video board that was installed in 2016. Springfield Cardinals General Manager Dan Reiter said it is not only a goal to continue to enhance Hammons Field as a premium environment for player development and player safety, but also to enhance fan experience.

“We are very excited to partner with the City of Springfield and install our brand-new LED stadium lights at Hammons Field,” said Springfield Cardinals General Manager Dan Reiter. “The LED lights are not only a critical upgrade in continuing to bring our ballpark into compliance with Major League Baseball’s facility standards, but they will also greatly enhance the fan experience during games and events and allow us to really have some fun from an entertainment standpoint.

"They are one of the biggest (and brightest) stadium improvements in our ballpark’s history, and we can’t wait for everyone in our community to see them shining for the first time during our game, fireworks celebration and concert on the 4th of July.

Players and fans will get their first look at the new, radiant lights when the Cardinals open a one-week homestand beginning, July 4. Expect to see flashing lights after home runs, and multi-colored lights to enhance the game and promotions during the game.

The move comes as one of the first of many updates required by Major League Baseball for all its affiliated minor league stadiums. The City committed $4 million dollars in upgrades as a part of an agreement to purchase the stadium earlier this year, which is being used to fund the LED Lights installation and other required upgrades for MLB compliance. The improvements will bring the stadium up to Professional Development League (PDL) standards to improve safety and help the Cardinals remain competitive to offer quality experiences that benefit our residents and visitors, according to Amanda Ohlensehlen, the City’s Director of Economic Vitality.

The Cardinals 4th of July Game will feature a postgame Fans-On-Field Fireworks Celebration and postgame concert by Red Light Runner, presented by Aaron Sachs & Associates. It will also be a Great Southern Bank $2 Tuesday with hot dogs and bratwursts for just $2. First Pitch is 5:35pm, gates open at 4:35pm.

Springfield man sentenced for bank robbery

(From the U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri)

A Springfield, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for robbing a local bank.

Richard Lavern Neil Kuder, 26, was sentenced by U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips to nine years in federal prison without parole. The court also ordered Kuder to pay $7,215 in restitution.

On July 24, 2020, Kuder pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery. Kuder admitted that he stole $7,215 from Central Bank of the Ozarks, 2501 N. Kansas Expressway in Springfield, on June 11, 2020. Kuder presented a bank teller with a note that said, “Very sorry to do this but I need all of the money out of cash register ... This is a robbery.” The teller handed him the cash and Kuder left the bank. He was last seen running through the bank’s parking lot.

In addition to the bank’s surveillance video, numerous businesses near the bank also had surveillance photos of Kuder as he was making his approach to the bank and his getaway after the robbery. Surveillance video showed him hailing a cab, which reported taking Kuder to an apartment complex. Investigators were able to track Kuder to his own apartment complex, which was nearby, and he was identified as a resident. The manager of the apartment complex said Kuder had been behind on his rent, but on the day of the bank robbery, he paid $1,000 cash for his past due rent and his next rental payment.

Detectives contacted Kuder, who was on parole for a previous robbery conviction, and he was taken into custody.

According to court documents, Kuder has two prior felony convictions and 13 prior misdemeanor convictions, including several violent crimes. These crimes of violence have included resisting and striking a law enforcement officer, striking and strangling an unknown man on a local bus and then striking his daughter when she tried to assist her father, and using a firearm to threaten store security and another person.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney. It was investigated by the Springfield, Mo., Police Department, the Greene County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department and the FBI.

Battlefield man sentenced to 30 years for leading conspiracy to distribute nearly 38 kilos of fentanyl

(From the U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri)

A Battlefield, Mo., man was sentenced in federal court today for leading a conspiracy that distributed nearly 38 kilograms of fentanyl in southwest Missouri and resulted in several overdose deaths. Two Springfield, Mo., residents were also sentenced as co-conspirators in the drug-trafficking conspiracy.

James D. Collins, also known as “Red,” 49, was sentenced by U.S. Chief District Judge Beth Phillips to 30 years in federal prison without parole.

Co-defendant Rufus H. Jones, also known as “Shorty,” 73, of Springfield, was sentenced to 13 years in federal prison without parole. Co-defendant Heather R. Kinnison, 31, of Springfield, was sentenced to four years and six months in federal prison without parole.

On Aug. 17, 2022, Collins pleaded guilty to leading the conspiracy to distribute fentanyl in Greene County from Jan. 31, 2019, to May 18, 2020, and to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering. Jones and Kinnison also pleaded guilty to their roles in the drug-trafficking conspiracy.

According to court documents, Collins is responsible for the distribution of 37.8 kilograms of fentanyl. Collins transported at least 300 grams of fentanyl by vehicle from either St. Louis, Mo., or Chicago, Illinois, to Springfield twice a week. Collins then distributed fentanyl to co-conspirators, including Jones. Collins admitted to investigators that he had been dealing with his source of supply for the past 10 years.

On April 17, 2020, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at Collins’s residence. They found a large plastic bag that contained 331.1 grams of fentanyl. Law enforcement seized more than 700 grams of fentanyl during the course of the conspiracy.

According to court documents, multiple overdose deaths occurred related to Collins’s distribution of fentanyl. After he was incarcerated in the Greene County Jail, Collins bragged to his cellmate about multiple overdoses caused by the drugs he was distributing.

For example, in March 2020, co-defendant Elmer E. Freeman Jr., also known as “Duck,” 56, sold fentanyl (supplied by Collins) to Randi Highfill, who in turn, distributed the fentanyl to an individual identified in court documents as “J.G.” J.G. died, and Highfill pleaded guilty in state court to involuntary manslaughter and delivery of a controlled substance in connection with this incident. On Oct. 22, 2019, another individual identified in court documents as “J.W.” overdosed and died.

According to court documents, Collins led a conspiracy that was distributing significant amounts of fentanyl laced with an assortment of other dangerous substances, including xylazine. The DEA recently issued a Public Safety Alert warning about the newly widespread threat of fentanyl mixed with xylazine. Xylazine, also known as “Tranq,” is a powerful sedative that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved for veterinary use. Because xylazine is not an opioid, naloxone (Narcan) does not reverse its effects. As a result, xylazine and fentanyl drug mixtures place users at a higher risk of suffering a fatal drug poisoning. Moreover, people who inject drug mixtures containing xylazine also can develop severe wounds, including necrosis—the rotting of human tissue—that may lead to amputation.

Lab results indicate that the fentanyl seized from Collins’s residence contained fentanyl, tramadol, cocaine, and xylazine. Fentanyl seized from one of his co-conspirators contained fentanyl, tramadol, and xylazine.

In his plea agreement, Collins admitted that he purchased a 2015 GMIC Yukon XL with a $7,000 cash down payment and two additional cash payments totaling $13,500. The vehicle was purchased in a co-conspirator’s name with the proceeds of illegal drug trafficking.

Collins also possessed a Smith & Wesson .45-caliber pistol in connection with his drug trafficking activities and maintained a stash house to avoid detection by law enforcement.

Collins, Jones and Kinnison are among five defendants who have been sentenced in this case. Freeman is among seven defendants who have pleaded guilty and await sentencing.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jessica R. Eatmon and Cameron A. Beaver. It was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Springfield, Mo., Police Department, the Greene County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department, and the Phelps County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department.
