Springfield woman injured when canoe capsizes on James River

A Springfield woman was injured when a canoe, she was riding in capsized 12:55 p.m. Saturday on the James River between Shelven Rock and Hootentown Access.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Charles C. Racca, 40, Springfield, was operating the unregistered canoe and he was seated with Peggy Ryan, 33, Springfield, in the front bow seat when the canoe floated into a tree on or near the bank of the James River.

Ryan stuck her leg out on the right side to steady the canoe and it tipped enough to allow water in, then rocked the canoe back to the left. In doing so, the gunwhale of the canoe, which she was straddling, came up and struck her in her groin area.

Ryan was treated for moderate injuries at Cox South Hospital, Springfield.
