(From Springfield Public Schools)
Back to School Grant Check Delivery Day is one of the best days of the year at the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools. On Sept. 8, nearly 30 Foundation volunteers embarked to 43 SPS sites to surprise more than 100 teachers, librarians and principals with grant checks. In total, volunteers presented $246,370 to Springfield schools from the Foundation's Back to School grants program.
"It's our own surprise, 'prize patrol' event that creates excitement and long-lasting benefits for our students' education," said Natalie Murdock, Foundation executive director.
The annual event is made possible by generous donations from community members, businesses and individuals. This year, grants were awarded in the categories of student experience, modern learning environment, classroom projects, community engagement, professional development and Reading Roundup.
"Through the many donations to this program, the Foundation was again able to provide grant support to teachers and principals all across our district," said Matt Simpson, Foundation president-elect. "Through each of the six categories, teachers and librarians were rewarded for their efforts to support their students' academic achievements. Each of these individuals goes above and beyond the call of duty to seek additional funding for their projects, and we applaud their efforts."
Since the Foundation's inception more than 20 years ago, the non-profit has provided classroom and school grants to teachers and principals. To see a complete list of Back to School grant projects funded this year, click here.
