(From the Springfield Police Department)
Springfield police officers were dispatched to the 2700 Block of North Glenstone, at approximately 4:28 a.m., on May 11, in regards to a male subject walking along the roadway wearing a mask and carrying a handgun. Upon arriving in the area, officers observed the male suspect on the south side of the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites at 2720 N. Glenstone. When the suspect saw the two officers, he ran northbound away from the officers. Both officers chased the suspect on foot.
The suspect ran to the parking lot of the Hampton Inn Hotel located at 2750 N. Glenstone. The suspect stopped running when he reached the area near the southeast parking lot of the hotel and pointed a handgun at the officers. Both officers fired their duty weapons, and the suspect was struck. Then, the officers secured the suspect and rendered aid. The suspect was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he is in serious but stable condition.
Shortly after the arrest of the suspect, officers learned that the Phillips 66 Gas Station at 2540 N. Glenstone had been robbed just prior to officers being dispatched to the original call of the suspicious male with the gun. The robbery at the Phillips 66 had not yet been reported and evidence located at the scene linked the suspect to the recent robbery.
The suspect was identified as Michael D. Hancock, 47, of Springfield. The Greene County Prosecutor’s Office has charged him with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action with a bond amount of $500,000. The charges announced herein are merely an accusation, and Hancock is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The two involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, while the SPD conducts the investigation into the shooting. Once complete, the results of that investigation will also be submitted to the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
Detectives continue to investigate the officer involved shooting and the robbery. Detectives are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-8477.
