Springfield driver slams into pregnant pedestrian, baby delivered, later dies at hospital

The Springfield Police Department was dispatched to an injury crash near the intersection of Chestnut Expressway and Main Avenue at 12:24 a.m. on June 30. 

A Dodge Ram 2500 driven by Amy McCarty, 42, of Springfield, was traveling eastbound on Chestnut Expressway, just east of Main Avenue, when it struck a female pedestrian who was traveling southbound across Chestnut Expressway with two males. 

The female pedestrian was identified as Mirenda Barrows, 26, of Springfield. Barrows was pregnant and was transferred to a hospital with serious injuries. Barrows delivered her baby upon arrival at the hospital. The unnamed female baby later died, and Barrows is in critical condition. Next of kin was notified. 

McCarty and the two male pedestrians reported no injuries. There is no evidence of driver impairment at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.

This marks the tenth fatality crash in Springfield for 2017.
