(From Springfield Public Schools)

District notes continued strength in English Language Arts, while closing gaps at several grade levels & among important subgroups as compared to state average

Statewide test results for the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) have been released for the 2017-2018 school year. While the new design of the 2018 test does not allow a traditional year-over-year comparison, it does establish a new foundation to measure growth.

"Our students have worked hard to master the standards that these assessments help measure, with outstanding guidance from our teachers and support staff," saidDr. John Jungmann, superintendent for Springfield Public Schools. "We are proud of their efforts and also appreciate the support provided by parents and the community to help our students give their best effort throughout the testing process each year."

Springfield Public Schools earned 102.7 points out of 120 points possible, for anAPR percentage of 85.6%. SPS notes the following achievements in the 2018 academic standards used to measure overall performance.

English Language Arts

Received all possible APR points for the fifth consecutive year.
Proficiency rates for grades 5 and 7 are above the state average.
Closed the gap or exceeded state average on proficiency rates for all grade levels.
Results have improved for black students in grades 3-8 by 5.1% as compared to the state average.
English Language Learner (ELL) students scored above the state average by 3.9%.
Free and reduced lunch students increased performance by 2% as compared to the state average.
All subgroups have closed the gap or exceeded the state average.

Math

Assessments for grades 5, 7 and 8 are moving closer to the state average.
Four out of six grade levels have closed the gap on the state average.
Hispanic students in grades 3-8 outperformed previous results compared to the state average.
Results have improved for black students in grades 3-8 by 2.4%.
Four out of six subgroups have closed the gap on the state average.

College & Career Readiness

Graduate follow-up surveys indicate 91.2% of 2017 SPS graduates were positively placed in a college/university or technical college, were employed, or engaged in military service.

Attendance

Approximately 20,500 students attended 85% or more of the school year, with the district increasing APR points to 7.5 out of 10.

Graduation

Continued graduate recovery efforts for fifth, sixth and seventh year students have led to completion rates exceeding 90%.

"The MAP test is one of the many ways school districts ensure we are meeting the educational needs of our students," continued Dr. Jungmann. "High academic standards will help prepare Missouri students for success, both in school and beyond. We are committed to providing all children in our district with those opportunities for success. While we have much to celebrate, we are committed to continued growth and improvement and look forward to the important work ahead."

Background on 2018 MAP Results

Due to changes in legislation and learning standards, Missouri has now experienced four new tests in five years. This week's release of the 2018 data follows significant delays in order to allow testing experts to work with Missouri educators to establish a new baseline for school districts. The following is noteworthy:

The tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and math were new in 2018. Direct comparisons of the 2018 test results to the previous year are not possible because the exam's design differed substantially.
Science scores are not reported as part of the 2018 results. Last year, the science exam was administered as a "field test" to allow new performance levels to be set for a 2019 comparison.
