Springfield man killed in crash near Chadwick


A Springfield man was killed in a one-vehicle accident 1:30 p.m. Saturday on Highway H, six miles south of Chadwick.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2007 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Keith Czarniak, 66, Springfield, traveled off the right side of the roadway and crashed, ejecting Czarniak.








Christian County Coroner Mandi Armitage pronounced Czarniak dead at the scene at 3:35 p.m.

The fatality was the 103rd this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Republic man killed in collision on N. Glenstone

On November 26, 2020, at 11:45 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the 2600 block of N. Glenstone regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a Ford Focus and Honda Accord.

The Ford Focus was traveling southbound on Glenstone and the Honda was traveling northbound on Glenstone. The driver of the Honda made a left turn into 2601 N. Glenstone and the vehicle was struck on the passenger side by the Ford. 









Fifty-two-year-old Daniel Roberts, of Republic, MO, was in the front passenger seat of the Honda. Roberts was transported to Mercy Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Next of kin has been notified.

Officers with the Traffic Unit of the Uniform Operations Bureau are investigating the circumstances involved in the crash. Impairment is not suspected to be a factor. This is the 23rd fatality motor vehicle crash and the 25th total crash-related death of 2020 for Springfield.

Springfield man killed in motorcycle crash

On November 23, 2020, at 4:41 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the intersection of Campbell and Madison regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a 2004 Honda motorcycle and a 2019 Volkswagen SUV.

The initial investigation indicated the motorcycle was northbound on Campbell, near Madison, at a high rate of speed. 








The motorcycle struck the rear of the SUV and then a utility pole on the east side of Campbell. The motorcycle rider was transported by EMS, but succumbed to his injuries. The motorcycle rider was identified as 42-year-old Donald Ray Stewart, a male from Springfield. Next of kin has been notified.

Officers with the department’s Traffic Unit are investigating the circumstances involved in the crash. Based on witness statements, speed and careless driving appear to be contributing factors to the crash. This is the 22nd fatality motor vehicle crash and the 24th total crash-related death of 2020 for Springfield.

Ponce De Leon man killed in crash near Nixa


A Ponce De Leon man was killed in a one-vehicle crash 6:45 a.m. today on Main Street, one mile south of Nixa.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2005 Chevrolet Alero driven by Jacob A. Davis, 20, Ponce De Leon, ran off the roadway and struck a tree.







Christian County Coroner Mandi Armitage pronounced Davis dead at the scene at 7:32 a.m.

The fatality was the 102nd this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.

Springfield man arrested on murder charge following shooting death at Economy Inn on N. Glenstone

On Nov. 20, 2020, at 7:51 a.m., Springfield Police were dispatched to the Economy Inn located at 2555 N. Glenstone after a 911 caller reported that a male subject had been shot. When officers arrived, they found a deceased male outside of a motel room who had suffered a gunshot wound.

The victim was identified as Billy G. Glass III, a 37-year-old male from Springfield. Next of kin notifications have been made.

The Springfield Police Department Violent Crimes Unit identified a suspect in the case as Troy Jones, a 43-year-old male from Springfield. 








 Jones was located by Springfield Police Officers and placed under arrest for 2nd Degree Murder. The case will be presented to the Greene County Prosecutor’s Office for review and potential filing of criminal charges.

Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS (8477).

This marks the 23rd violent death in Springfield in 2020. Sixteen of those have been determined to be Murder under the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) rules, one was classified as Negligent Manslaughter, and two others were ruled justified after review by the Greene County Prosecutor. Four other cases remain under investigation to determine the appropriate classification.

Springfield Public Schools schedule meetings to receive public input on finding replacement for Jungmann

With the pending retirement of Dr. John Jungmann at the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year, Springfield Public Schools has begun a nationwide search for a new superintendent. ​The recruitment effort is led by executive search firm GR Recruiting and input from community stakeholders is key to this important work.

A series of ​community input sessions​ will be held on Nov. 17 and 18 and all community members are invited to participate in the meetings, choosing the option and format that are most convenient. SPS seeks to engage teachers, support staff, students, parents, community partners and others in the engagement process.

The schedule for the ​nine feedback opportunities​ is outlined below. The sessions will be facilitated by representatives from GR Recruiting.

Republic man killed in motorcycle crash at Chestnut Expressway and 65

On November 6, 2020, at 3:27 a.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the intersection of Chestnut Exp. and US Highway 65 regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a 1993 Yamaha Motorcycle.

The driver, 20-year-old Sean Carter of Republic, MO, lost control of his motorcycle, left the roadway, and was ejected onto the concrete barrier between concrete pillars under the Highway 65 bridge. Medical personnel responded, but Carter succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Next of kin has been notified. 






 

Officers with the department’s Uniform Operation Bureau investigated the circumstances involved in the crash. Currently, no witnesses to this accident have been identified.

Springfield Police searching for parents of toddler left alone in park

UPDATE: The parents of the toddler found at Fort and State were successfully located at around 9:20 p.m. tonight. This was possible with the help of our vigilant community members. Thank you to everyone who assisted in the search and shared the information on social media.

This evening (Nov. 4, 2020) at about 5:30 p.m. a witness located a female child, between the age of two and three years old, wandering alone in a park at Fort and State (1200 W. State). The child had a heavily soiled diaper and was unattended. 

The witness stayed with her for roughly an hour to see if a parent arrived. When no parent was located, the police were called. 








 Officers arrived on-scene at approximately 6:20 p.m. and attempted to locate the child's residence. At the time of this information release, the parents have not been located and no calls have been received for a missing child.

The little girl appears to be multiracial, has brown curly hair and brown eyes. She is 37 inches tall, 28.5 pounds, wearing a white t-shirt with multicolored patterns and floral pants.

Police investigating shooting of Springfield man by DEA special agent

On Nov. 2, 2020, at approximately 3:28 p.m., a Special Agent with the Drug Enforcement Administration was involved in an officer-involved shooting at 1827 S. Maryland. Agents on-scene secured the suspect and rendered aid, but the suspect died on-scene.

The deceased was identified as Caleb J. Slay, a 25-year-old male from Springfield, Missouri. Next of kin notifications have been made.

The Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division is currently investigating this incident.
