The City of Springfield and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board will dedicate the new Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park Stormwater and Trail Improvements project at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 9. The lakeside dedication will include a ribbon cutting, an overview of the project and refreshments.
The Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park Stormwater and Trail Improvements project includes stabilization and beautification of the Lake Drummond spillway to address erosion that occurred after floods in recent years, creates enhanced views of the new water features, and improves the South Creek Greenway at both ends of the South Creek culvert under Scenic Avenue. Public Works began work on the project in September 2013.
The $1.1 million project cost includes approximately $900,000 for construction and $100,000 for design costs. Hartman Construction was the contractor and Olsson Associates provided the design for the project.
The Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park project is the fifth of six cooperative projects between Springfield Public Works and the Park Board designed to improve water quality and access to lakes, streams and waterways in public parks, funded by the 2006 Springfield-Greene County Parks/Stormwater Sales Tax, which sunset in June 2012.
Waterway improvements at Doling Park, Sequiota Park, Fassnight Park and Dickerson Park Zoo are also complete. Improvements are in progress for the Ward Branch Greenway.
