On May 18, 2019, at 2:52 p.m., Springfield Police received a check the wellbeing call.
The caller stated that a male subject had shot a female victim inside 632 W. Walnut, Apartment B.
When officers arrived, they observed the male suspect who refused to exit the apartment.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect, but he refused to speak with officers or exit the home.
After negotiations failed, Special Response Team Officers entered the apartment and discovered two deceased individuals inside. Both individuals appeared to have injuries consistent with gunshot wounds.
The deceased individuals were identified as Jacqueline L. Steinert, a 52-year-old female from Springfield and Matthew T. Stephens, a 53-year-old male from Springfield. Next-of-kin notifications have been made for both subjects. At this time, investigators do not believe there is a suspect at large and feel there is no danger to the community.
Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869- TIPS (8477).
