Wendy Garrison promoted to chief judge of Municipal Court
Wendy Garrison became the new chief judge of the Springfield Municipal Court, effective July 3rd.
Wendy was selected using a very thorough and competitive process. She is very bright, experienced and has a terrific approach. Wendy’s broad experience includes private practice, defense counsel, general law and municipal court. Wendy has most recently served as a Springfield Municipal Court judge since January of 2018. We truly look forward to having Wendy as our chief judge and encourage you to welcome her in this new role.
First monkeypox case in Greene County
The Health Department reported the first case of monkeypox in Greene County July 5th. Health Department epidemiologists have contacted those who may have been exposed to the virus.
Monkeypox most commonly spreads through prolonged and close, often skin-to-skin, contact. While the risk of infection to the public is low, people should still monitor for symptoms to avoid spreading the virus to others. Symptoms include a blistering rash, fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills and exhaustion.
The Health Department is providing up-to-date information about the virus and how to prevent its spread at health.springfieldmo.gov/monkeypox. Questions regarding individual symptoms or risk of exposure should be directed to health care providers.
Informational open house on Kansas Avenue improvements this Thursday
The City is gathering feedback on conceptual design plans for safety and pedestrian improvements along Kansas Avenue between Walnut Lawn and Maplewood in the Greater Parkcrest neighborhood.
This is a citizen supported ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax budgeted at $750,000 for design. The design will address reconstruction of the roadway, elimination of deep ditches, and the addition curb and gutter and underground stormwater collection. This project design is intended to increase functionality and safety for motorists.
An informational open house is scheduled 5-7 p.m., this Thursday, July 14 at Amazing Grace Fellowship Church at 3801 S. Kansas Avenue for residents and property owners to learn more about the project and provide feedback. Input can also be submitted virtually by visiting springfieldmo.gov/kansasavenue.
Reconstruction of Division Street between National and Glenstone begins this week
Springfield motorists can expect various lane shifts along Division Street between National and Glenstone beginning this week as we begin roadway work related to the Division Street Reconstruction Project. Work to relocate utility lines began in May. Construction is expected to last one year. Approved by voters in the 2019 City’s ¼-cent Capital Sales Tax renewal, the project includes the complete rebuilding of Division Street between National and Glenstone including new pavement, curb and gutter as well as stormwater drainage improvements. A new sidewalk will be constructed along the north side of the roadway and a multi-use path along the south side. Gas and water utility renewals will be conducted through a cost-share agreement with City Utilities.
Full closures of the roadway should be limited to nighttime hours so we can keep daytime traffic flowing as much as possible along this busy east-west corridor. Future traffic impacts will be shared with the public as soon as details are available.
Construction is anticipated to cost approximately $4.7 million and will be funded through the ¼-cent Capital Improvement and the 1/8-cent Transportation sales taxes.

A special ordinance authorizing the City Manager, or his designee, to apply to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development for Federal Fiscal Year 2022 Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership Program funds under the Consolidated Plan, to accept Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership Program funds, to enter into any necessary agreements to carry out the grants, and to exercise any and all powers necessary to implement selected projects; selecting projects for funding for the City of Springfield Fiscal Year 2022-2023; reaffirming the City Council Objectives and Community Development Priorities; and declaring that this Ordinance qualifies as a one-reading bill pursuant to City Charter Section 2.16(25).
