Springfield Public Schools supports Tobacco 21 Act

(From Springfield Public Schools)

Springfield Public Schools fully supports the proposed Tobacco 21 Act, set for introduction to Springfield City Council on June 17. As a district, our top priority will always be the well-being of our 25,000 students and this public policy promises to make a significant positive impact on the health of our youth.

We know that Missouri has an above-average smoking rate, that nearly all adult smokers started before the age of 21, that many younger students gain access to tobacco products through their older student peers, and that e-cigarettes are surging in popularity with teens.

By raising the legal sales age to 21, Springfield will join 21 other Missouri communities. It is also important to note that 15 states have enacted this policy statewide.

Data indicates that the Tobacco 21 Act could result in an estimated 25% decline in smoking initiation among 15-17 year olds and a 15% decrease in smoking initiation for 18-20 year olds. Because tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the United States, SPS believes Tobacco 21 is the right policy, at the right time, for our students and our community.

We encourage City Council to take this important action.
