Springfield man killed when tow truck driver runs over him

(From the Springfield Police Department)

On May 2, 2020, at 9:24 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the area of US. Highway 65 and Chestnut Expressway, regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

A 2017 Ford F-650 tow truck (Affordable Towing), driven by 29-year-old Alan Goodkin of Springfield, MO, was on the northbound shoulder of US Highway 65 just north of the Chestnut Expressway overpass.

As Goodkin began to reverse the tow truck to load a 2007 Pontiac Solstice owned by 63-year-old Matthew K. Canovi of Brighton MO, he struck Canovi who was standing on the shoulder of US Highway 65.

Goodkin, the driver of the Ford F-650, did not report any injuries, however, Canovi died at the scene as a result of the crash. Next of kin has been notified.

The investigation is ongoing as to the circumstances involved in the crash. Impairment does not seem to be a factor. This is the fifth fatality motor vehicle crash in Springfield during 2020.
