According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2008 Lexus IS250 driven by Matei Pop, 23, Springfield, failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the roadway through the median, across the southbound lanes and struck a rock bluff.
Pop was pronounced dead by Dr. Manning of Cox South Hospital at 10:03 a.m..
The fatality was the 34th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
