According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2006 GMC Sierra driven by Gregory A. Lenox, 51, Buffalo, and a 2011 Ford Edge driven by John S. Smith, 54, Pleasant Hope, struck each other head on.
Dr. Kenneth Larson and Dr. Scott Henke pronounced Smith dead at 11:23 p.m. at Mercy Springfield.
Lenox was treated for moderate injuries at Mercy.
The fatality was the 20th this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
