Monett man charged with beating up girlfriend arraigned, pleads not guilty

A Monett man was formally arraigned and pleaded not guilty to felony second degree assault charges this morning in Barry County Circuit Court.

According to the probable cause statement, the Barry County Sheriff's Office arrested Jesse Dwayne Wages (DOB 1984) Wednesday after his girlfriend was able to get away from him and call for help.

The woman claimed Wages choked her. She tried to leave several times, but he blocked the door. The woman had bruises and scratches on her arm and neck, the report said.

When the deputy arrived at Wages' home, he admitted to arguing with his girlfriend, but denied hitting or choking her.

Asked how she got the bruises, Wages "said he didn't know where she had been, so he didn't know how she got them."

After that, the report said, Wages told the deputy he would not come outside "he was going back to sleep and closed the door."

A few moments later, the girlfriend opened the door for the deputy and Wages was placed under arrest, according to the probable cause statement.
