Professional storyteller engages Weller Elementary students as Black History Month concludes

(From Springfield Public Schools)

Fourth- and fifth-graders at Weller Elementary School ended their Friday and Black History Month with a special visitor, Gladys Caines Coggswell.

The professional storyteller shared her program, "A Feast of Stories with a Storyteller," and engaged students in a variety of oral literacy exercises.

"This is an exciting opportunity for students to think about their families and their own stories," said Laura McBride, English Language Learner specialist and equity champion at Weller Elementary. "A lot of our students come from a diverse background, and representation of their stories is so important for those students and for every student to see."

Coggswell is participating in Springfield's African American Read In program, a culminating annual event held during Black History Month. The Read-In is a collaborative partnership advancing literacy of all persons, while providing mentorship to readers, promoting multicultural authors and hosting literary events throughout the year.

Charlotte Hardin and equity and diversity specialist Gwen Marshall helped to facilitate the event with Weller Elementary students.

"This is a wonderful way to engage our students in the African American Read-In," said Marshall. "The public is invited to the other events during the weekend, but this is a special time for our students to hear from an award-willing storyteller."
