Truman Elementary School special education teacher Jean Lawson has been selected as a finalist for the 2019 Missouri Teacher of the Year award by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Prior to this award, she was named the Missouri Regional Teacher of the Year by the Southwest Region and Springfield Teacher of the Year.
"As a teacher, I create opportunities for students to expand their knowledge," said Lawson. "In addition to looking for students' strengths, I create opportunities for growth potential in my students. My role as a teacher has a clear purpose: maximize opportunities for maximum outputs. Every student deserves the best education available."
Lawson is one of seven Missouri educators selected as finalists. School districts throughout the state submitted nominations for the award, and a panel appointed by DESE selected the finalists from among 32 regional teachers of the year.
A committee comprised of teachers, business leaders and education organization leaders will choose the Missouri Teacher of the Year following interviews with each finalist on Aug. 21. The winner, finalists and regional Teacher of the Year will be honored at a banquet in Jefferson City on Oct. 22.
