Springfield Police arrest murder suspect

At approximately 2:38 a.m. on Sunday, August 5, Springfield Police Officers responded to 1119 N. Grant Avenue after a caller indicated a person at that location had been shot. When officers arrived, they found a male inside the residence with a serious gunshot wound. The man was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, but later died. Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Section began a homicide investigation and processed the scene for evidence.

The victim was identified as Marcus Gilbert, a 32-year-old male from Springfield. Next of kin notification has been made.

The suspect was identified as Daniel J. Smith, a 29-year-old male from Springfield. The Greene County Prosecutors Office filed charges of first degree murder and a warrant was issued for Smith’s arrest. On Thursday, August 9, Smith was arrested by Springfield Police Officers at a residence outside of Springfield, in Greene County. Smith is currently being held in the Greene County Jail without bond.
