Springfield Police service dog Terra retires

(From the Springfield Police Department)

Police service dog, Terra, of the Springfield Police Department officially retired from her duties in November due to both her advanced age and the concurrent retirement of her handler, Officer Jeff Ferneau.

Terra, a Belgian Malinois, was born in Holland in 2008 and served the SPD as K9 partner to two officers since 2012. In Terra’s career serving the department, she was deployed 563 times and was responsible for locating 29 people, making 82 narcotics finds and assisting with 77 arrests.

The SPD appreciates the service of Terra to the department and toward the safety of officers as well as the Springfield community. Terra will continue living at the home of retired Officer Ferneau enjoying her retirement years.

Springfield City Council recently approved a $16,000 donation from the Springfield Police Foundation which will fund the purchase of two new police service dogs for the department to replace Terra, as well as Aries, who retired in September 2016.
