Aurora couple shot to death in apparent murder-suicide

(From the Aurora-Marionville Police Department_

On 6-14-2022 at approximately 8:14 a.m., AMPD received a 911 call from a neighbor who had received a call from a resident of 1642 Oak Drive asking that they call 911 to get help to the home. That call to the neighbor came from John Proudfoot, 74, Aurora.

AMPD arrived at approximately 8:17 a.m. From an open door in the garage, law enforcement personnel could see what appeared to be a male body on the couch in the living room.

Upon entry, officers discovered two deceased individuals on the couch, together, and both appeared to have suffered gunshot wounds.

The scene was processed by AMPD detectives. The preliminary investigation, along with evidence located at the scene suggests that John Proudfoot shot and killed his wife, Lowona Kay Madore-Proudfoot,m 67, with a .38 revolver before then taking his own life.

The revolver, along with other evidence from the scene was collected. The remains of Mr. and Mrs. Proudfoot were turned over to the Lawrence County Coroner, Scott Lakin, and autopsies are scheduled for later this week.

The investigation is ongoing and a motive for this tragedy has not yet been determined.
