(From the U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri)
A Springfield, Missouri, man was sentenced in federal court today for his role in a conspiracy that distributed 45 kilograms of methamphetamine in southwest Missouri.
Kenneth R. Friend, 48, of Springfield, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool to 27 years in federal prison without parole.
Friend pleaded guilty on April 5, 2019, to participating in the conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in Greene, Polk, Christian, Jasper, Laclede, and Webster Counties from June 1, 2013, through Nov. 29, 2014. Friend also pleaded guilty to money laundering by engaging in monetary transactions to promote unlawful activity.
Beginning in 2012, the Drug Enforcement Administration, assisted by other agencies, investigated one of the largest methamphetamine distribution rings in southwest Missouri. The investigation resulted in the indictment of 29 defendants. Friend is among 28 defendants who have pleaded guilty in this case and have been sentenced.
Friend admitted the conspiracy was responsible for the distribution of more than 45 kilograms of methamphetamine.
During the conspiracy, Friend obtained large amounts of methamphetamine from various sources. For example, Friend paid one source $20,000 in early November 2014 for two pounds of methamphetamine. Friend also intended to purchase a large amount of methamphetamine from one of his sources on Nov. 27, 2014.
As part of the investigation, law enforcement officers arrested Friend, his then-girlfriend and one of his suppliers. During the execution of a federal search warrant at the supplier’s residence in Springfield, agents found approximately $20,000 and approximately five and a half pounds of methamphetamine. Friend admitted that he intended to purchase at least two of the five and a half pounds seized from this source of supply. Agents also seized $34,310 from Friend, which he had intended to use to purchase the two pounds of methamphetamine.
Agents also seized Friend’s 1992 Harley Davidson motorcycle, which he used to distribute methamphetamine and which he purchased with proceeds from the sale of methamphetamine. Friend must forfeit the cash that was seized and the motorcycle to the government.
This case is being prosecuted by Supervisory Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall D. Eggert and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Nhan D. Nguyen and Cynthia J. Hyde. It was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, IRS-Criminal Investigation, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Springfield, Mo., Police Department and Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Springfield Fire Department to visit elementary classrooms
(From the Springfield Fire Department)
The Springfield Fire Department will once again use October’s Fire Prevention Month as an opportunity to educate the community about fire and life safety.
By the end of October, the SFD will have provided more than 10,000 children with life-saving safety education they will carry with them for a lifetime. During school visits, firefighters provide information to children on how to prepare for, prevent and respond to fires and other emergencies. The lessons include hands-on activities to make the visits educational and fun and are taught by Springfield firefighters who have been specially trained for Fire Prevention Month. In addition to elementary schools, firefighters will also be visiting numerous preschools throughout Springfield..
Following each school visit, each child will be given a survey to take home about what they learned from their firefighters. Every child who returns the form will be entered into a drawing to win a ride to school in a fire engine. Twelve lucky children, one from each of the 12 fire station districts throughout the city, will be randomly chosen for this experience.
The Fire Prevention Month program is part of the department’s comprehensive Community Risk Reduction program, which is focused on reduction and elimination of risk from fire in our community.
And remember, if you need a smoke alarm or replacement battery, or would like to have your smoke alarm(s) tested, please contact the Fire Department at 417-874-2300 to schedule your appointment.

Springfield man, kingpin of Greene County heroin trafficking organization, sentenced to 24 years
(From the U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri)
A Springfield, Missouri, man was sentenced in federal court today for leading a drug-trafficking organization that distributed as much as 10 kilograms of heroin in Greene County, Mo., over a 15-month time period.
Jovan J. Denson, 41, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough to 24 years and four months in federal prison without parole.
On March 18, 2019, Denson pleaded guilty to participating in a conspiracy to distribute heroin from March 1, 2016, to May 18, 2017. Denson also pleaded guilty to four counts of distributing heroin, one count of possessing heroin with the intent to distribute, and one count of money laundering (involving the down payment on a vehicle with $9,500 in proceeds of illegal drug trafficking).
Denson was arrested on May 17, 2017. At the time of his arrest, he was in possession of $11,500 that was derived from drug distribution. Law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at his residence the same day and seized approximately 528 grams of heroin. During the time of this conspiracy, Denson was on state parole for distributing crack cocaine.
Denson is among 14 defendants charged in this case, and among six who have pleaded guilty and been sentenced. Five co-defendants have pleaded guilty and await sentencing; one co-defendant is deceased.
Co-defendant Gerald E. Pope, 41, of Springfield, pleaded guilty in federal court today to his role in the conspiracy to distribute heroin. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.
One dose of heroin, which sells on the street for approximately $5 to $15, contains on average about .025 grams of heroin (40,000 doses per kilogram). An individual dose of heroin can be fatal, depending on its purity, and at least one death was linked to this conspiracy.
This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Josephine L. Stockard. It was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, IRS-Criminal Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Springfield, Mo., Police Department, the Greene County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Billy Long: President Trump's modernization of military paying off for Southwest Missouri
(From Seventh District Congressman Billy Long)
All too often, our soldiers at home and abroad find themselves working with decades-old equipment and technology.
In order to be prepared to defend the nation at a moment’s notice, we need to usher the military into the 21st century.
President Trump made a promise during his campaign to increase military readiness through the modernization of military equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure. A modern military ensures that our nation is safe and that our interests and allies are protected.
President Trump’s modernization effort has begun to pay off not just for the military, but also for the people of southwest Missouri.
During my annual manufacturing tour, I visited Alpine Aviation Group, which fabricates digital electrical harnesses for Blackhawk helicopters. Once installed, these harnesses will convert the helicopters from an analog to a digital platform.
They recently opened their doors in Ozark, Missouri, and plan to bring 40 high quality and high paying avionics jobs to the area. While they are in the early stages of production, at full capacity, Alpine plans to meet the U.S. Army’s goal of converting a total of 716 aircraft over a 15-20 year period.
What stood out to me about Alpine Aviation Group was how federal defense spending here in the halls of Congress can have a direct impact on the community.
President Trump has been committed to increasing military readiness through modernization, and Congress, for the most part, has supported that effort. Previous National Defense Authorization Acts (NDAA) have devoted hundreds of millions of dollars towards modernization efforts.
This spending is flowing directly back to southwest Missouri through the establishment of Alpine Aviation Group and the 40 high-quality manufacturing jobs they will be offering.
While Congress as of now has not been able to agree on how to adequately fund our nation’s military for the fiscal year 2020, I remain committed to supporting President Trump in his effort to modernize our military.
I support giving our men and women serving in the military the very best equipment, vehicles, and gear. Not only does it make them safer at home and abroad, but it also makes our nation safer. I am proud of the role that Alpine Aviation will be playing in President Trump’s effort to promote readiness through modernization and am pleased they have chosen to make Ozark their home.

Weller Elementary students, staff, parents raise $30,000+ for new playground
(From Springfield Public Schools)
At Weller, which is the heart of its central Springfield neighborhood, about 87 percent of its students are eligible to receive free or reduce priced lunch. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse elementary schools in Springfield. As an English Language Learners program site, Weller has students who are originally from Asia, Europe, Central America and Africa.
"Our students may speak many different languages but when they go outside for recess there are no language barriers," Donaldson said. "Play is the universal language of children."
Last year, Donaldson realized it would be necessary to raise private funds in order to replace some outdated playground equipment. She partnered with Cunningham Recreation, and its division--Play 4 ALL- to launch the community-wide effort. Dr. Peggy Riggs, a retired Springfield Public Schools administrator, served as a liaison and assisted Donaldson with the effort.
Extensive research supports the notion that children learn better through play and that a daily recess period, which provides access to climbers, slides, sensory-rich activity panels, monkey bars and other obstacles, helps children pay better attention in the classroom. Play also fosters cooperation, strengthens social cohesion while teaching children life skills like taking turns, resolving conflict and setting goals.
The first opportunity Weller students will have to use the new playground equipment will be Friday after the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
At 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, Weller Elementary School will celebrate a successful collaboration and fundraising effort which has resulted in a new playground for students and the community.
Over the past year, Weller students, staff and parents have raised over $30,000 to help pay for the $220,000 playground. One Weller student donated her life savings of $120 to support the effort. The remainder came from generous private donors, grants and assistance from partner Cunningham Recreation/Play 4 ALL.
"This would not have been possible without the involvement of so many different people," explained Principal Rebecca Donaldson. "Not only will our students benefit from this wonderful new playground, but our entire community will be able to enjoy it when school is not in session."
