Springfield police detectives observed a vehicular assault occur at the Price Cutter at West Bypass/Chestnut at approximately 2:40 p.m. They attempted to make contact with the suspect driver, now identified as Tommy Morris, Jr., who had hit a male victim pushing a shopping cart, but Morris fled by vehicle.
An investigator began to pursue Morris, activating lights and sirens, but lost sight of his vehicle at Scenic and Catalpa.
Officers in the area were attempting to relocate Morris when they came upon the crash that occurred at Scenic and Mt. Vernon between Morris’s vehicle and three additional vehicles. The primary officer was no longer in active pursuit. Morris had the red light, and he T-boned another vehicle in the intersection.
The female driver of this vehicle died at the scene, and police are working to confirm her identity and make next of kin notifications.
Other drivers and occupants were not injured. Impairment may be a factor in this crash. Morris, who has a felony drug warrant, is being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a hospital.
The male pedestrian hit by Morris at Price Cutter left before a police unit could make contact with him and is being asked to contact the Springfield Police Department. The investigation is ongoing
