While strongly associated with weekly smoke alarm canvasses, Project RED Zone is much more. Reduce, Educate, Deliver includes all the efforts by the department to reduce risk and protect lives and property in the city.
At the end of September, smoke alarm canvasses were nearing completion in the Woodland Heights neighborhood.
In 2018, RED Zone canvasses have resulted in the installation of 685 smoke alarms and 194 batteries, 1,481 smoke alarms tested and 5,147 homes visited in the ongoing effort to provide life-saving smoke alarms to Springfield residences.

Third “Don’t Be a Dummy” PSA released
Another component of Project RED Zone is the “Don’t Be a Dummy” public service announcements. The department released its third PSA in the series promoting fire safety in the home, this time focusing on careless smoking.
The “Don’t Be a Dummy” campaign features a straight-talking Springfield firefighter who has a habit of catching residents engaging in unsafe behaviors such as overloading electrical outlets and careless cooking. The firefighter is always reminding us that most fires in Springfield are caused by "smart people making dumb decisions," highlighting the fact that almost all home fires are completely preventable.
