City of Springfield celebrating America Recycles Day

(From the City of Springfield)

City of Springfield Environmental Services is celebrating America Recycles Day, Thursday, Nov. 15, by thanking the community for recycling and supporting sustainable solid waste management in Springfield with free coffee, doughnuts and prizes.

Coffee and doughnuts will be available 8 a.m-5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 15 at the Lone Pine Recycling Center (3020 S. Lone Pine Ave.), Franklin Avenue Recycling Center (731 N. Franklin Ave. ) and Yardwaste Recycling Center (3790 S. Farm Road 119, Brookline).

“These are popular facilities and vital services in the community,” explains Ashley Krug, sustainability and market development coordinator for Environmental Services. “Folks enjoy doing their part to make our community sustainable and we love to hear how much pride they have in their recycling sites. We want to give the community a big high five for their efforts and cheer them on.”

Recyclers can pick up new “I recycle @” stickers to feature on their car or recycling bins. Recyclers will also have the opportunity to win special giveaway items such as T-shirts, bins and mulch coupons.

A special “rally hour” will be held 11 a.m.- noon at Franklin Avenue; 1-2 p.m. at Lone Pine; and 3-4 p.m. at the Yardwaste Recycling Center. Rally hours will feature increased volunteer cheering sections, potential “celebrity recyclers” and partner agency presence.

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep America Beautiful, is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. Every year on or around Nov. 15 (America Recycles Day), local events are held throughout the country to celebrate and learn more about recycling programs.

About Springfield’s Integrated Solid Waste Management System

The Lone Pine Avenue Recycling Center and the Springfield Sanitary Landfill are part of the City’s voter-approved Integrated Solid Waste Management System, which manages and reduces Springfield’s waste stream. The system is funded primarily by landfill fees and the sale of mulch and compost products at the Yardwaste Recycling Center. The system includes the Franklin Avenue Recycling Center, Yardwaste Recycling Center, Household Chemical Collection Center, Public Education and Market Development Programs.
