Courtney Dameron, Hillcrest family and consumer sciences teacher, was named Springfield Public Schools 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year during the Teacher Appreciation Banquet Monday, April 15. Dameron was one of five finalists selected from 171 nominations.
"I believe in engaging curriculum that benefits a student for their lifespan," shared Dameron. "My students succeed in my classes not just because of the strategies chosen, but because I do my best to create meaningful relationships with each and every single one of them. I respect them as the young adults they are."
Dameron discovered her passion for teaching while taking FACS classes in Jane Rasmussen's classroom at Hillcrest. Rasmussen encouraged Dameron to pursue her dream and mentored her throughout college, student teaching and her first years with SPS. Beginning her SPS career at Central, Dameron jumped at the chance four years ago to return to her alma mater, replacing her mentor, in the original classroom where she first fell in love with FACS.
Dameron, a blended learning mentor, uses technology as a tool to engage and bring out students' highest potential, giving them the opportunity to showcase their skills. Combining technology with classic instructional methods allows for differentiated learning for students so they can have the greatest outcomes.
Dameron will go on to compete at the regional level Teacher of the Year. Individuals selected from each region will then compete for Missouri Teacher of the Year.
The Teacher of the Year Banquet was hosted by the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools at the Oasis Convention Center.
