Springfield Police investigate fatal motorcycle crash on West Chestnut Expressway

On August 29, 2020, at 02:08 a.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the 4300 Block of West Chestnut Expressway regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a 2002 Indian motorcycle and a 2011 Dodge Charger.

The initial investigation indicated the motorcycle was westbound on Chestnut Expy and appeared to be in the outside lane. The Dodge was westbound in the outside lane when the motorcycle braked in front of it. The Dodge appeared to attempt to avoid the motorcycle but was unsuccessful. 

The left front corner of the Dodge struck the motorcycle and the Dodge continued westbound across the roadway and came to rest on the outside lane of eastbound Chestnut Expy. 








The motorcyclist, 56-year-old Gail Marriott, was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest in the outside lane of westbound Chestnut Expy.

Marriott was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. On August 31, 2020, at 3:52 a.m., Marriott died from injuries related to the crash.

The driver of the Dodge remained at the scene. The initial and follow-up investigations are being conducted by SPD’sTraffic Section. Next of kin has been notified.

This is the 13th fatality motor vehicle crash and the 15th crash-related death of 2020 for Springfield.
