Please join us for a rededication ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of Lincoln Memorial Cemetery at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 9. The board will also dedicate a new marker and celebrate the completion of a new fence at the ceremony.
Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, located at Chestnut Expressway and Barnes Avenue, is the burial place of some of Springfield’s oldest African American families, containing gravestones with birth dates dating back to the 1850s. More than 1,200 are laid to rest there.
In 2009, the last owner of the cemetery deeded it to the 12-member volunteer executive board, which now oversees the upkeep of the historical site. The cemetery is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization funded entirely through donations.
