Thirteen candidates certified to run for Springfield mayor, city council

(From the City of Springfield)

Springfield City Clerk Anita Cotter has certified 13 applicants to be included on the ballot for the April 4, 2017 election.

Five City Council Seats and the office of Mayor are open this cycle. Zone 2 Councilman Tom Prater must run for his seat, following an appointment last September. The Zone 2 seat was vacated after former Councilman Justin Burnett resigned.

The following is a list of council seats up for re-election and their contenders:

Mayor

Ken McClure

Kristi Fulnecky

General Seat A

Incumbent Jan Fisk

Jesse Coulter

Allen Kemper

General Seat B

Incumbent Craig Hosmer

Curtis Montgomery

Zone 1

Incumbent Phyllis Ferguson

Thomas Quinn

Zone 2

Incumbent Tom Prater

Helen Gunther

Zone 4

Incumbent Craig Fishel

Debra Brady

Since both Mayoral candidates are City Council incumbents in the middle of their terms, whichever candidate is successful will vacate his/her current seat at they time he/she is sworn in as Mayor. It is anticipated that this vacancy – in either General Seat C or D – will be filled through an appointment process in the same manner as previous vacancies were filled. This process is outlined in section 2.5 of the City Charter.

It is anticipated the City will begin accepting applications in mid-to-late April. The Council person appointed would serve until the regular April 2019 election.
