Work resumes on Route 39 bridge in Aurora next week

(From MODOT)

Work is scheduled to resume the week of July 29 on a project to build a bridge over the railroad tracks at Missouri Route 39 and Carnation Avenue and improve railroad crossings to create a train “Quiet Zone” in Aurora, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

The project was temporarily suspended in late 2018 when it took longer than anticipated for contract coordination between Burlington Northern-Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad and the contractor, Hartman & Company, Inc., for work over and near the railroad tracks.

Those plans have now been approved.

The contractor plans to resume work on the project Monday, July 29, and will have up to 140 days to complete the work. The new completion date is December 16, 2019.

Project summary:

-New bridge over BNSF railroad tracks near Carnation Drive

-Box culvert replaced at Route 39 at Chat Creek

-Add railroad signals and crossing arms on Elliot Avenue (Lawrence County Route K) between Olive Street (Route 39) and Mill Street creating a Quiet Zone (Once railroad crossing improvements are made, the City of Aurora will apply to the Federal Railroad Administration to establish a Quiet Zone which means trains will no longer sound their warning horns while traveling between Route 39 and Elliot Avenue in Aurora)

-New sidewalks along the north side of Mill Street between McNatt Avenue and Elliot Avenue and along west side of Elliot Avenue between Mill Street and Olive Street

-Install pedestrian crossing arms on west side of Elliot Street on either side of the railroad tracks between Mill Street and Olive Street

-Close railroad crossings at Morgan Avenue and McNatt Avenue after bridge improvements are in place on Route 39

The project is a partnership between MoDOT and BNSF Railroad

Prime contractor: Hartman & Company, Inc. of Springfield

Total estimated project cost: $6.7 million
