Portion of Fremont Avenue to close for two weeks

(From the City of Springfield)

Fremont Avenue will close to through traffic between Battlefield Road and Sunset Street for approximately two weeks as City Utilities continues relocating electric lines in preparation for the Battlefield Road and Fremont Avenue Intersection and Roadway Improvement Project, anticipated to occur in 2020.

Beginning 9 a.m., Friday, March 8, motorists can expect the complete closure of Fremont Avenue in two phases. The first phase will close the roadway between the mall entrance and Sunset Street, allowing access to the mall from the south. Phase two will close Fremont Avenue between Battlefield Road and the mall access, allowing entrance to the mall from the north.

Each phase will take approximately one week, weather permitting. Access will be maintained for local traffic to residences and businesses only. Detour routes will be posted guiding traffic around the work zone via Sunset Avenue, National Avenue and Battlefield Avenue.

These closures will facilitate the installation of new transmission poles that require the use of a 30- by 30-foot crane.

Following these closures, various single lane closures and shifts will continue to be necessary as crews complete construction. Digital message boards are in place to provide motorists with up-to-date closure details. The public is encouraged to visit the City’s website and social media pages for closure updates.

About the Battlefield and Fremont Intersection and Roadway Improvement Project

The Battlefield and Fremont Intersection and Roadway Improvement Project will include the widening of Fremont Avenue to five lanes between Battlefield Road and Sunset Street. Improvements will also be made at the Battlefield Road and Fremont Avenue intersection, with traffic signal upgrades and additional turn lanes.

Pedestrian improvements will include new sidewalks north and south along Battlefield, east along Fremont and the addition of multi-use path on the west side of Fremont Avenue. CU will install new steel street light poles on the east side of Fremont Avenue in conjunction with the roadway project.

The roadway improvements project, which has an estimated cost of $5 million, is funded through the voter-approved ¼-cent Capital Improvement Sales Tax.
