Thank you to Springfield Police Department We always appreciate the fine work of the Springfield Police Department, but I think we can all agree that their work last week, responding to several tragedies, warrants special mention. Ultimately, there’s not a lot Police can do to prevent the types of tragic homicides that occurred, but they put forth incredible effort in solving the homicides quickly and hold those responsible accountable. Of Springfield’s five homicides in 2017, criminal charges have been filed already in four. Thus, I want to publicly thank Police Chief Paul Williams and the incredible Springfield Police force.
Springfield Fire Department work leads to arson arrest
The Springfield Fire Department on Friday presented a case to the Greene County Prosecutor’s office with details associated with multiple arson fires in the area of 620 W. Scott Street, near Franciscan Villa, an affordable housing community.
Beginning in the fall of 2015, a series of fires in this area resulted in the Springfield Fire Marshals launching an investigation into fires that were determined to be suspicious in origin.
The collaboration in the investigative process was instrumental to the successful resolution of this case and I would like to recognize the Fire Marshalls, the Springfield Police Department, Greene County Arson Tasks Force, and the Mid-States Organized Crime Information Center (MOCIC).
The suspect has been charged with six counts of knowingly burning, a Class E Felony, and is currently being held in the Greene County Jail.
Jefferson Avenue Footbridge UpdateAbout 80 citizens attended a Council Workshop Jan. 31 about the fate of the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge. Thank you Mayor Pro Tem McClure, Councilmen Fishel, Hosmer, Schilling and Prater and Councilwomen Fisk and Ferguson for attending. As you know, the next step is to fund a design phase, which could take several months. As you know, and as discussed during the public workshop, the anticipated $200,000 design cost will be funded from the 1/8-cent transportation tax’s line item for bridges. Unexpected events like this present a set of difficult challenges, considering there are no funds currently available or expected to be available for the $2.8 million needed to rehabilitated the bridge. I understand that there is a motivated group of preservationists, however, who are starting to mobilize to try to find funding for a portion of the project.
Sidewalks in Zone 1We continue to be amazed by the ongoing support in the community for improvements in Zone 1. As we had hoped, the Zone Blitz has taken on a life of its own and every week we hear from current and new partners launching new projects. Tonight, we bring forward an important bill that seeks to accept the bid for a sidewalk project - 2.6 miles of new school sidewalks in Zone 1. These areas near Westport, Bissett and Watkins Elementary Schools were pointed out to us in our Community Listen series. I’d like to thank those citizens who highlighted these sidewalk needs on behalf of Zone 1 children. Thank you for your continued support.
Sales tax down compared to budget; up compared to this month last yearThe City of Springfield's February 2017 1% general sales tax check from the Missouri Department of Revenue is down 4% compared to the amount budgeted. The check reflects sales processed by the state in January from transactions made primarily in December 2016.
The sales tax check was $3,096,088, compared to the budgeted amount of $3,219,325
When comparing to the same month last year, February receipts are up $159,232, or 5%, over receipts from February 2016. On a year-to-date basis, receipts are down 3%, or $933,728.
The City heavily relies on sales tax revenues as its main source of revenue to fund vital services, such as police and fire operations. In Springfield, approximately 60% of revenue in the General Fund comes from sales tax and use tax.
