Springfield Police shoot, kill gun-wielding suspect at Silver Springs Park

(From the Springfield Police Department)

Springfield police officers were dispatched to 1100 N. Hampton, Silver Springs Park, at approximately 3:21 a.m. on Jan. 1, in reference to a male suspect who was threatening to kill his wife and was armed with a gun. Upon arriving at the location, officers observed the male suspect in the park.

Officers first attempted to speak to the suspect, but he was non-compliant. Due to the observation of the suspect's actions and his prior comments to 911 in reference to his possession of a gun and threats to kill his wife, officers deployed less lethal weapons in an attempt to safely detain the suspect. The officers’ use of less lethal weapons was unsuccessful, and the suspect subsequently displayed a handgun. Officers on scene fired their duty weapons, striking the suspect. Officers then secured the suspect and rendered aid. The suspect was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital where he later died.

The deceased suspect has been identified, but the name will not be released until next of kin has been notified. An autopsy will be conducted by the Greene County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Detectives continue to investigate and are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-8477
