Springfield Fire Chief David Pennington has been awarded the Ambassador of the Year Award by the Center for Public Safety Excellence.
CPSE is an international technical organization that works with the most progressive fire and emergency service agencies and most active fire professionals. Its mission is to lead fire and emergency services to excellence through the continuous quality improvement process of accreditation, credentialing, and education.
“The CPSE Ambassador of the Year Award recognizes an individual who goes above and beyond in their support of accreditation, credentialing, and CPSE as a whole. Chief Pennington received his Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designation in 2012. He is a strong advocate for professional credentialing within his department and neighboring communities.
"Under Chief Pennington’s mentoring and leadership, 25 officers of the Springfield Fire Department have successfully gone through the designation process making his department have more designated officers than any other. In addition, Chief Pennington has served as a peer reviewer for the Commission on Professional Credentialing since 2014. A proponent of accreditation, Chief Pennington successfully took his department through accreditation for the third time,” according to CPSE.
Pennington was appointed Fire Chief in May 2017. He began his fire service career as a volunteer firefighter with the Logan-Rogersville Fire Protection District in 1994, and became a part of the City of Springfield Fire Department in 1998. He promoted to the ranks of Rescue Specialist, Truck Company Captain, Fire Captain, and Battalion Chief. As Battalion Chief, he served in the Operations Division and as the Chief of Special Operations, then as the Acting Assistant Fire Chief of the Training Division. He became the Assistant Fire Chief of Operations in 2010.
Pennington was selected as the 2015 Springfield Fire Department Fire Officer of the Year. He is a member of the Class of 2018 IAFC Fire Service Executive Development Institute. He served as a member of the faculty in the Department of Communication at Missouri State University from 2005 until 2019.
Pennington has a bachelor of science degree in organizational communication and a master’s in administrative studies, both from Missouri State University. He earned a graduate certificate in public management from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
He is a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, IAFC-FSEDI, Missouri Valley Fire Chiefs Association, Queen City Fire Chiefs Association, and Region-D Regional Homeland Security Oversight Committee.
Pennington serves on the boards of directors for Community Partnership of the Ozarks and the United Way of the Ozarks where he also serves as a panel co-chair for the community investment process. He is active in the region as a member of the Regional Homeland Security Oversight Committee, and at the state level as the Missouri Association of Fire Chiefs fire service representative to the advisory board for the Missouri Information Analysis Center (MIAC).
“It is a tremendous honor to represent the City of Springfield and the Fire Department with this recognition. I am very proud of our chief officers, fire officers and fire marshals who have and are working toward their professional designation. The Springfield Fire Department has more professional designations than any other organization in the global CPSE network, an accomplishment I am intensely proud of,” Pennington said.
