Springfield Police investigating officer-involved shooting death

(From the Springfield Police Department)

Springfield police officers were dispatched to 2021 N. National at approximately 1:25 p.m. on Jan. 5 after a 911 caller stated two armed subjects were trying to break into a shed at that location.

The first officer to arrive observed a male suspect in front of the home at that location. After seeing the officer, the suspect ran to the backyard of the home. The first responding officer pursued the suspect on foot and was able to catch the suspect in the backyard.

The suspect then produced a handgun and pointed it at the officer. The responding officer fired his duty weapon striking the suspect. The officer then rendered aid to the suspect. The suspect was transported by ambulance to Mercy where he later died.

The deceased suspect has been identified as William B. Oleson, 46, of Springfield. Next of kin notifications have been made for the suspect.

Detectives continue to investigate the officer-involved shooting, and they are asking anyone who has information about this incident to contact the Springfield Police Department at 417-864-1810 or to make an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers at 417-869-8477.
