Investigation continues into Springfield Police officer-involved shooting

(From the Springfield Police Department)

Springfield police officers were dispatched to 2021 N. National at approximately 1:25 p.m. on Jan. 5 after a 911 caller stated two armed subjects were trying to break into a shed at that location.

The first officer to arrive, Officer Eric Morgan, observed a male suspect, later identified as William Oleson, 46, in front of the home at that location. Upon seeing Officer Morgan, Oleson ran to the backyard of the home. Officer Morgan pursued Oleson on foot and was able to catch him in the backyard. After a brief struggle, Oleson produced a handgun and fired at the officer. Officer Morgan returned fire with his duty weapon striking Oleson. Officer Morgan secured Oleson as a backup officer rendered aid. Oleson was transported by ambulance to Mercy Hospital where he later died.

Officer Morgan, a 16-year veteran of the SPD, was not injured as a result of this incident. He has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy, while the SPD conducts the investigation into the shooting. Once complete, the results of that investigation will be submitted to the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney for review.
