Springfield City Council moving from Historic City Hall; Roku channel announced

(From the City of Springfield)

As renovations to Historic City Hall get underway later this year, City Council and Planning & Zoning Commission meetings will move to a temporary location later this year. The location is yet to be determined. The renovation project, paid for by level property tax, is expected to take more than two years.

The City’s Public Information & Civic Engagement department will make a number of adjustments to operations in order to ensure the public continues to have the opportunity to tune in to public meetings and view educational videos on CityView, the City’s video platform.

The City will continue to live stream City Council, P&Z and other public meetings, on the City’s website at cityview.springfieldmo.gov, and on the City’s Facebook page. In 2024, the department is planning to launch streaming media channels that will allow more people to view content on their televisions.

This will include access via Roku, Amazon, Apple iOS and Android. The streaming interfaces will allow viewers to view archived video and return to videos beginning where they left off watching. Beginning July 13, CityView will cease broadcasting on Mediacom cable and AT&T U-Verse as a cost-savings measure.

Aging and expensive equipment, combined with declining cable viewership has led to this decision. The requirement to move the video control room out of City Hall has accelerated this move.

“We are excited to expand into the streaming media platforms further,” said Cora Scott, director of Public Information & Civic Engagement. “We currently have a Roku channel, but by the end of the year, we will build out our streaming presence, with a robust and user-friendly navigation system on the most often used channels. We are excited to bring even more timely and meaningful video content to our residents.”

The City’s Public Information & Civic Engagement department offers an average of two public engagement opportunities each week and broadcasts City Council, City Utilities, Airport Board, Planning & Zoning Commission, and Park Board, along with producing public service campaigns for the police and fire departments as well as the remainder of the City’s 20-plus departments. During the pandemic, the department hosted and broadcast more than 500 video news briefings, along with the Springfield -Greene County Health Department, a service residents came to depend on for often life-saving information.

“We continue to invite residents to be a part of their local government in whatever way they can,” Scott said. “Our websites and social media sites provide daily updates you can subscribe to, and we have a print newspaper that can be delivered at no cost to your front door. It is easier than ever to stay in touch and get involved.”
