Greene County deputies capture possible drunk driver following pursuit, crash, foot chase

(From the Greene County Sheriff's Office)

A possible impaired driver, a stolen truck, a pursuit, and a fight with deputies in a muddy field all because a thief thought he could get away.

Around 0100 Tuesday morning, Deputy Marshall was patrolling in the area or Farm Road 140 and Red Ave, when he observed the driver of a 2005 Chevy 1500 pickup make several lane violations.

Deputy Marshall believed the driver was possibly intoxicated. He attempted to stop the truck; however, the driver refused to stop. A short pursuit ensued and during this pursuit it was confirmed the truck was stolen. Sgt. Strain deployed stop sticks at 266 and State Highway K flattening both passenger side tires.

The driver drove the stolen truck off of the roadway and through a fence and into a cow field consisting of only mud and standing water. The truck crashed into a creek and the driver, identified as Matthew Gardner, fled on foot with Deputy Garver hot on his heels.

Gardner did not give up, after being tased, he began fighting Deputy Garver in the mud until Deputy Marshall arrived and assisted with placing Gardner in handcuffs.

Deputies Garver and Marshall’s uniforms were completely soaked and covered in mud. Luckily they escaped without any injuries.

Gardner was provided a free shuttle ride to the Greene County jail. He was booked and charged for 1st Degree Tampering, Resisting Arrest, Property Damage, and Driving While License Revoked and has a $75,000.00 open court bond. Great teamwork by everyone our overnight crew and everyone involved.
