The Springfield Police Department responded to a crash that occurred at approximately 10:46 p.m. on May 18 at the intersection of St. Louis St. and Jefferson Ave.
An SPD officer driving a patrol SUV was westbound on St. Louis in the left turn lane, stopped at a stop sign and preparing to turn south onto Jefferson, which is a one-way street.
Two pedestrians were walking eastbound in a crosswalk to cross Jefferson on the south side of St. Louis St. The officer turned to travel southbound and struck the two pedestrians.
Upon impact, the officer stopped the vehicle and checked on the status of the pedestrians who were conscious and alert. Along with EMS being dispatched, additional SPD officers responded to the scene to investigate the crash.
The male pedestrian declined medical attention. The female pedestrian was transported to a hospital to be evaluated. She was treated and released from the hospital on May 19.
The Missouri Uniform Crash Report was completed and filed. Additionally as with any crash involving an SPD vehicle, the circumstances of the crash will be internally reviewed, per SOG 103.1 (Section 4.7):
4.7 Physical Injury and Property Damage Accidents (CALEA 1.3.8)
4.7.1 While working in an official capacity or operating a city-owned vehicle, all employees shall promptly notify their immediate supervisor of any incident which results in a serious physical injury or death of an individual, personal injury of an employee, or damage to or involving any city-owned vehicle, equipment, or property.
4.7.2 Employees who become involved in such incidents shall make no public statement as to nature of the incident or responsibility and shall not advise other parties involved in the incident of any liability for damage or injury.
4.7.3 An administrative review of the incident shall be conducted at the direction of the Chief of Police. (CALEA 1.3.8)
