Springfield man drowns in James River


A Springfield man drowned in an accident 5 p.m. Sunday on the James River, two miles south of Highway 14.

According to the Highway Patrol report, Brian A. Gomez, 46, Springfield, was operating a kayak, left the kayak and was last seen standing in waist deep water on a gravel bar. Gomez was later found under a root wad in the river.

The drowning was the third this year for Highway Patrol Troop D.
