(From the Springfield Police Department)On November 23, 2020, at 4:41 p.m., officers with the Springfield Police Department responded to the intersection of Campbell and Madison regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a 2004 Honda motorcycle and a 2019 Volkswagen SUV.
The initial investigation indicated the motorcycle was northbound on Campbell, near Madison, at a high rate of speed.
The motorcycle struck the rear of the SUV and then a utility pole on the east side of Campbell. The motorcycle rider was transported by EMS, but succumbed to his injuries. The motorcycle rider was identified as 42-year-old Donald Ray Stewart, a male from Springfield. Next of kin has been notified.
Officers with the department’s Traffic Unit are investigating the circumstances involved in the crash. Based on witness statements, speed and careless driving appear to be contributing factors to the crash. This is the 22nd fatality motor vehicle crash and the 24th total crash-related death of 2020 for Springfield.
