Hillcrest High School science teacher killed in crash on I-44

Note: The victim in the crash was a science teacher at Hillcrest High School.

On Jan. 5, 2024, at 3:22 p.m., Springfield police officers responded to a multi-vehicle crash on I-44 near the Glenstone exit.

Bashir Mohamed, 32, from Minneapolis, was driving a white semi-trailer truck westbound on I-44. Mohamed left the roadway just west of US65 into the median and went through the cable barrier and guard rail. Mohamed hit a 2022 Toyota Sienna, driven by Jennifer Bryant, 45, from Springfield, and a 2006 Freightliner.

 

Bryant died at the scene. Bryant’s family has been notified.

Mohamed and his passenger were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Freightliner had minor injuries.

The circumstances of the crash are still under investigation.

This was Springfield’s first fatal traffic crash in 2024.
