Investigation continues into house fire on North Grant Avenue

(From the Springfield Fire Department)

While responding to an unrelated medical call shortly after 7 a.m. on North Grant Avenue this morning, the Springfield Fire Department passed a boarded-up house with smoke and flames coming from the rear of the structure.

They reported the fire to Springfield-Greene County 911 Emergency Communications and proceeded to the medical emergency a block away.

911 dispatched fire crews to the 1500 block of North Grant Avenue for the fire at approximately 7:12 a.m.

Upon arrival, the initial responding fire companies found heavy fire from the first and second floors of the structure. Bystanders indicated that everyone in the home had escaped. Crews went ahead and performed search operations, which was challenging due to the extensive amount of fire. The first arriving fire officer on the scene requested a second alarm for additional fire resources.

A total of 10 fire companies consisting of 29 firefighters and four chief officers were on scene to contain the fire. Two structures on either side of the initial fire sustained minor damage to their exteriors.

Fire marshals with the Fire Prevention Bureau are conducting an investigation. Due to the extensive damage to the structure, the City’s Public Works Department is demolishing the house for safety purposes.
