Springfield police investigating officer's shooting of unarmed panhandler
Springfield Police are conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting of an unarmed panhandler near Bennett and Glenstone Friday. The officer involved has been identified as Jason Shuck. The video is from KOLR News.

The City of Springfield has completed a Year in Review report that highlights initiatives, projects, programs and events that defined Springfield in 2013.
Mayor Bob Stephens says in his opening message of the report, “One of the qualities that makes Springfield strong is our ability to collaborate … We owe much of what we accomplished in 2013 to collaboration."
City Manager Greg Burris says, "The successes chronicled in this Year in Review publication highlight only some of the hard work accomplished by the City of Springfield in 2013."
In addition to financial information, the Year in Review includes articles and photo features that highlight each of the City's service areas. QR codes linking to videos and pdfs offer readers more in-depth information about those services.
The City encourages citizens to download and review the report (15.1 mb pdf), which can also be found on the City's homepage at www.springfieldmo.gov.

Bluegrass at the Bass event tonight

Join us tonight at 7 p.m. inside the Bass Pro Outdoor World main entrance for "Bluegrass at the Bass," the second pop-up performance in the "Spring Ring" red kettle campaign for The Salvation Army. Bass Pro employee and bluegrass musician Nathan Long and his daughter Heather will perform, along with several members of the Greater Ozarks Bluegrass Society. The set list includes "Atlanta," "Foggy Mountain Breakdown," "Rocky Top," "Fireball Mail," "East Virginia Blues," and other bluegrass songs. Red kettles will be stationed at the Cherokee Street entrance, outside the main entrance and near the performers.
Onlookers are encouraged not only to donate to the red kettles, but to shoot video of the performances and post them to social media to help spread interest about the "Spring Ring" campaign.
Springfield police officer on leave after shooting panhandler at Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market

The Springfield Police Department was dispatched to Walmart Neighborhood Market at 1320 S. Glenstone Ave. in reference to an anonymous call to check a panhandling subject who may have outstanding warrants.
An officer responded to the location, and the subject ran away from the officer in the southeast direction toward Bennett St. The officer discharged his duty weapon and the subject sustained a gunshot wound. The officer then requested emergency medical services.
The subject has been identified as Eric David Butts, 26, of Springfield. He is on probation and parole for burglary and has a second-degree felony burglary warrant out of Greene County and a municipal traffic warrant out of Springfield. Butts is in police custody while being treated at a hospital.
The Criminal Investigation Division and Investigation and Internal Affairs Unit are both conducting investigations. The officer, who has been with the SPD for 11 years, is now on paid administrative leave. No further information regarding either investigation is available at this time.
