Springfield pedestrian killed in crosswalk at Glenstone and Evergreen

The Springfield Police Department was dispatched to Glenstone and Evergreen to investigate a serious accident at 9:44 p.m. on July 6. 

A white 1998 Ford Excursion driven by Zackery T. Cassady, 30, of Republic, was traveling northbound in the outside lane of Glenstone when it struck Edward E. Schuck, 55, of Springfield, in the crosswalk south of the intersection. 

Schuck was crossing eastbound in the crosswalk, but it is unknown at this time if the crosswalk signals were activated at the time. Impairment is not a factor in this case. The investigation is ongoing.

Springfield man killed in collision near Highlandville

A Springfield man was killed in a two-vehicle collision 2:45 p.m. Thursday on Route EE near Highlandville.

According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2007 Kawasaki Ninja driven by Justin D. Disher, 26, Springfield, crossed the center line and struck a 2014 Toyota Tundra driven by Diana K. Robertson, 52, Springfield.

Christian County Coroner Mandi Armitage pronounced Disher dead at 3:44 p.m.  The fatality was the first for Highway Patrol Troop D in July and the 79th for 2018.

Springfield Police Academy graduation scheduled

Graduation ceremonies for the officers of the 70th Springfield Police Academy will be held Friday, July 13, at Parkcrest Baptist Church, 816 W. Republic Rd. at 7 p.m.

These 19 graduates have undergone 1,099 hours (27 weeks) of intense law enforcement training. Upon graduation, they will be assigned to an experienced field-training officer (FTO) for approximately 520 hours (13 weeks) of on-the-job training. Once they complete the FTO program, these new officers will be assigned to the Uniform Operations Bureau.

The class consists of seventeen males and two females with education including a master’s degree, ten bachelor’s degrees, five associate's degrees and four with prior or current military experience.

The media and public are invited to attend.

Portion of Grand Street closed next week

Grand Street will close just west of the Grand Street and Delaware Avenue intersection beginning 8 a.m. Monday, July 9 through 4 p.m. Thursday, July 12 to allow for the construction of new water and gas mains.

Through traffic is advised to use the marked detour. Those traveling westbound will be detoured south on Delaware Avenue, while eastbound traffic will be detoured north on Fremont Avenue.

Springfield man charged with physcally abusing eight-year-old daughter

On July 1, 2018, Kenneth R. Davis, age 32,  Springfield, was arrested and charged for physically abusing his 8-year-old daughter on June 30th, 2018. 

Davis has been charged with six counts of Abuse or Neglect of a Child (D Felony) and pne count of Abuse or Neglect of a Child – Serious Emotional or Physical Injury (B Felony). 

Davis is currently housed in the Greene County jail with a $100,000.00 open court only bond.

Portion of Scenic Avenue to close for two weeks

Scenic Avenue will close for two weeks between Battlefield Road and Seminole Street beginning 6 a.m. Monday, July 9 for construction related to the Scenic Avenue Sidewalk project.

The roadway will reopen on the weekend – closing again Monday, July 16. All businesses in the area will be open and accessible. Through traffic is advised to seek an alternate route.

The Scenic Avenue Sidewalk Project consists of constructing a shared pedestrian/bicycle path along Scenic Avenue from Battlefield Road to Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park. New sidewalk will be continued north along Scenic Avenue to connect with existing sidewalk. This project will complete a pedestrian connection from Battlefield Road to Sunshine Street and provide a bicycle connection from on-street bike lanes on Battlefield Road to the South Creek Greenway Trail at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park.

The project will involve closures at various times. Drivers are asked to use caution when driving through the construction project, and use alternate roadways when possible.

Funding is being split between Zone 3 Pothole Funds and the 1/8-cent Transportation Sales Tax Alternative Transportation Program.
