Final asphalt work begins on Central and Pythian Phase 1 Corridor Improvement

Crews will begin the final asphalt work on the Central and Pythian Phase 1 Corridor Improvement project beginning 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4 through approximately 7 a.m. Oct. 5.
In an effort to accommodate school traffic, the following closures have been scheduled:

Hampton Avenue will close between Pythian Street and Central Street beginning 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4.
Pythian Street will close between Hampton Avenue and National Avenue beginning 4 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 4.
The new Central and Pythian Corridor (the area directly west of the railroad tracks to Hampton Avenue) will close to through traffic beginning 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4.
All streets will reopen upon completion of asphalt work by approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Springfield's John Jungmann named Missouri Superintendent of the Year

Association of School Administrators/Missouri School Boards' Association annual fall conference held Sept. 29-Oct. 2 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach.
Dr. John Jungmann, superintendent of SPS, was named Superintendent of the Year. Springfield Public Schools' Early Childhood Education Program was named MSBA FutureBuilders' Education Foundation Early Childhood Education Program of the Year. Board of Education member Gerry Lee was named the recipient of the 2016 MSBA FutureBuilders' Paul Morris Community Service Award at the Association of School Administrators/Missouri School Boards Association annual fall conference held September 29-October 2 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach.
Dr. John Jungmann, superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, was selected as Superintendent of the Year by MASA in part because of his commitment to moving SPS toward a focus on understanding and addressing opportunity gaps for all of SPS' 25,000 students. Throughout the process, he has engaged numerous stakeholder groups in conversations to identify priorities and solutions. When he became superintendent in 2014, he launched the community engagement process, culminating with the development of the district's new strategic plan.
Additionally, Dr. Jungmann's leadership with the Imagine SPS initiative challenged SPS, parents, students, business leaders and school personnel to dream of ways to make learning more engaging, relevant and personal. Their creativity was the catalyst for many of the innovative programs and initiatives now being implemented, including the redesign and expansion of summer learning opportunities, deployment of technology, flexible schedules and furnishings, and creation of collaborative learning spaces.
"I am honored to accept this award as recognition of the innovative work being done at SPS and would like to acknowledge the support of more than 4,000 SPS employees who work each day to make learning more engaging, relevant and personal for our 25,000 students," said Dr. Jungmann.
Beyond the leadership he provides for SPS, Dr. Jungmann promotes and enhances the image of public education through his involvement in educational organizations, including MASA and the American Association of School Administrators. Dr. Jungmann actively advocates for quality public education to organizations and associations throughout the region, state and nation.
Dr. Jungmann will be recognized during the AASA National Conference on Education in New Orleans in March for his state selection and will be considered for AASA's National Superintendent of the Year.

Bicyclist struck in Tuesday collision on Kansas Expressway dies

The Springfield Police Department was dispatched to Kansas Expressway and Bennett at 5:58 a.m. on September 27 for a crash involving a 2007 Ford F150 and a bicycle.
The Springfield Police Department was dispatched to Kansas Expressway and Bennett at 5:58 a.m. on September 27 for a crash involving a 2007 Ford F150 and a bicycle.
The driver of the pickup truck was identified as Rick A. Arispe, 36, of Republic. Arispe was traveling northbound on Kansas Expressway in the outside lane when his vehicle struck the bicycle which was traveling eastbound on Bennett.
The bicyclist, identified as Jeffery Potts, 29, of Republic, was transported to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.
The Springfield Police Department Traffic Section responded to conduct the investigation. The driver of the pickup was uninjured. He was cooperative, and there is no indication of impairment being a factor in the crash. The preliminary investigation indicated the northbound pickup was proceeding through the intersection with the green traffic light when it struck the eastbound bicycle, who reportedly had a red light. Potts later succumbed to the injuries sustained during the crash.
This marks the eighteenth fatality crash in Springfield for 2016.

Springfield teen injured in crash on 266
A Springfield teen was injured in a two-vehicle crash 10:45 a.m. Sunday on MO 266, three miles west of Springfield.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 1982 Chrysler LeBaron driven by Jesse T. Shipley, 18, Springfield, turned into the path of a 1995 Chevrolet pickup driven by Timothy C. Lakey, 25, Bois D'Arc. The Lakey vehicle struck the Shipley vehicle broadside.
Shipley was treated for serious njuries at Cox South Hospital, Springfield.

Rogersville man cited for DWI after three-vehicle, two-injury accident
A Rogersville man was arrested for felony driving while intoxicated and failure to yield following a three-vehicle accident 5:45 p.m. Sunday on Route YY, four miles south of Strafford.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a 2003 Chevrolet pickup driven by Stephen M. Liebeck, 48, Rogersville, turned into the path of a 2005 Kia Spectra driven by Marianne L. Stout, 40, Strafford, causing the Liebeck vehicle to strike a 2000 Ford Explorer driven by Walter L. Garrison, 47, Springfield.
Liebeck was treated for minor injuries at Cox South Hospital, Springfield. Stout, who also suffered minor injuries, sought her own treatment, according to the report.

Three people injured as three ATVs collide
Three people were injured in a three-ATV collision 12:58 a.m. today on Highway BB two miles east of Fair Play.
According to the Highway Patrol report, a Yamaha Raptor ATV driven by Dustin R. Gladden, 26, Dunnegan, a Yamaha Banshee 350 ATV driven by Thomas D. Gladden, 29, Bolivar, and a Honda Rincon ATV driven by Brittany L Williamson, 29, Springfield, collided when one ATV slowed down and was struck by the other two
The report said that at this time it is not certain which ATV slowed down

Motorcyclist killed in crash at Jefferson and Battlefield

The Springfield Police Department was dispatched to Jefferson and Battlefield for a serious injury crash at 8:19 p.m. on Sept. 30.
A black 2005 Suzuki GSXR 600 motorcycle, driven by Ishmael Hankins, 27, of Springfield, was traveling eastbound on Battlefield when a black 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Brian Allen, 27, of Springfield, made a left turn from westbound Battlefield to southbound Jefferson. The vehicles collided in the intersection.
Hankins was transported from the scene with life threatening injuries. He succumbed to those injuries at the hospital. Next of kin has been notified. Allen reported no injuries.
The crash is still under investigation at this time.
