New activities added to Birthplace of Route 66 Festival

The Birthplace of Route 66 Festival will take place Aug. 8-9, 2014 in downtown Springfield. Several new activities are added this year to help increase Springfield's profile as the birthplace of the Mother Road.
They include, but aren't limited to:
- 5K Run/Walk
- "Drive-in Movie" on the side of Springfield Expo Center
- Expanded vintage car show on Park Central Square
- Ribbon cutting for the Birthplace of Route 66 Roadside Park
And...a lineup of great musical acts throughout the weekend, including a concert at the Gillioz Theatre.

Lane closures planned at intersection of National and Grand

Repair work at the intersection of National Avenue and Grand Street will require lane closures on National Avenue from midnight Wednesday, June 4 until 3 p.m. Thursday, June 5. One northbound lane, one southbound lane and one turn lane on National Avenue will be closed during that time. Traffic will still be able to move through the intersection in all directions during the lane closures.

Springfield Police to hold Coffee with the Chief

Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams will be hosting "Coffee with the Chief" at 7 a.m. Friday, June 6, at the Big Momma’s Coffee and Espresso Bar, 217 E. Commercial. The purpose of the meeting is to encourage an open discussion between the public and the Chief. Anyone interested in asking questions or learning more about the Springfield Police Department is encouraged to attend.

Summer Snow Fest to return to Springfield

The 13th Annual Summer SnowFest returns to downtown Springfield’s Jordan Valley Park, 635 E. Trafficway Saturday, June 14, noon to 4 p.m.
Kids of all ages are invited to climb, slide and build snowmen in a mountain of snow made from ice shavings from Mediacom Ice Park. The event also features entertainment, interactive games, snowman building, moonwalks for the smaller kids, and more.
Several times a day, Ice Park staff resurfaces the ice with a Zamboni, a machine which shaves irregularities and smooths the ice. The Zamboni collects the shavings, which are normally dumped and allowed to melt. Over the last few weeks, Ice Park staff allowed the normal ice depth to nearly double on the West Rink to about two inches. Saturday, staff will shave the ice back to its normal depth of ¼" and haul the fluffy, white snow shavings outside for Summer SnowFest.
Summer SnowFest is FREE. Concessions are available. The event is sponsored by the Springfield-Greene County Park Board.
