Springfield Fire Department releases community engagement report

(From the Springfield Fire Department)

Springfield firefighters spent much of 2019 engaging in a variety of community outreach activities to educate citizens about how they can reduce fires and fire-related injuries and deaths.

Among the outreach activities were the Project RED Zone canvasses, in which crews go door to door in Springfield neighborhoods, offering to check smoke alarms for functionality and dead batteries.

If needed, fire crews install new alarms and batteries for neighbors. In 2019, fire staff reached more than 31,000 neighbors and installed more than 2,500 new smoke alarms.

Other 2019 community engagement activities included the installation of smoke alarms for the hearing impaired and escape ladders for residents who live in two-story homes, as well as Fire Prevention Month visits to every Springfield elementary school.
